History:
Sustainability was first addressed by the United Nations' World Commission on Environment and Development in 1987. Sustainable Development was defined as "Meeting the needs of the present generation without compromising the abilities of future generations to meet their needs."
Principles of Sustainability:
-
All citizens deserve equal opportunity to a clean environment and a high quality of life.
-
All citizens of the earth have a responsibility to care for our ecological resources as a whole.
-
Environment, economy and community are interdependent and integrally linked.
-
A sustainable economic system acknowledges the long-term costs of environmental, health and social effects.
-
Sustainable solutions must create networks between community stakeholders to achieve long-term benefits.
-
Local actions must be integrated with regional and global movements.
